Study of the mayfly order Ephemeroptera (Insecta) in Brazil: a scienciometric review

Study of the mayfly order Ephemeroptera (Insecta) in Brazil: a scienciometric review. Despite an increase in the number of studies in recent years of the aquatic insect order Ephemeroptera (the mayflies) much still remains to be learnt. In order to identify the current state of knowledge of this group in Brazil, we performed a scienciometric analysis with the purpose of identifying the strong and weak points of Brazilian research into the group. Our research used the "Institute for Scientific Information - ISI" database and was based on the abstracts, titles and keywords of manuscripts published between 1992 and 2011. We selected the papers with the combination of the words "Ephemeroptera" and "Brazil*" based on a search in February 2012. We analyzed 92 articles, and noted a lack of studies in some Brazilian states, no specific studies about some families, and an absence of phylogenetic studies. To improve ecological studies, it is necessary to fine-tune taxonomic resolution. Moreover, there is a lack of studies investigating the environmental variables which influence the distribution of mayflies. Despite these gaps, if the rate of publication with mayflies proceeds at the same pace, we anticipate that many of these knowledge gaps will be closed.

Tortopus Needham & Murphy and Tortopsis Molineri (Ephemeroptera, Polymitarcyidae) new species and new records from Brazil and Ecuador / Tortopus Needham & Murphy e Tortopsis Molineri (Ephemeroptera, Polymitarcyidae) nova espécie e novos registros de Brasil e Ecuador

Tortopus Needham & Murphy, 1924 and Tortopsis Molineri, 2010 with six and 10 species, respectively, are sister genera distributed in the Neartic and Neotropical regions. In spite that most species are known from the tropics of South America, only one species of each of these groups have been recorded from Brazil. Here we present distributional data expanding greatly the range of these groups including three new country records for Brazil: Tortopus igaranus Needham & Murphy, 1924, Tortopsis limoncocha Molineri, 2010 and Tortopsis spatula Molineri, 2010. We describe a distinct new species, Tortopus ipixuna sp. nov., from male imagos, that present a unique subrectangular pedestal. Additionally we redescribe the male imago of Tortopus harrisi Traver, 1950 (previously known only from the holotype), and we give the first records for Tortopsis canum Gonçalves, Da-Silva & Nessimian, 2011 from Espírito Santo and for Tortopsis spatula from Ecuador. Some variations in morphological structures of these species are also described, illustrated and discussed.

Tortopus Needham & Murphy, 1924 e Tortopsis Molineri, 2010 com seis e 10 espécies, respectivamente, são gêneros irmãos distribuídos nas regiões Neártica e Neotropical. A despeito da maioria das espécies ser conhecida de áreas tropicais da América do Sul, apenas uma espécie de cada um dos gêneros foi registrada para o Brasil. No presente estudo apresentamos dados que expandem significativamente a distribuição desses grupos, incluindo três registros inéditos para o Brasil: Tortopus igaranus Needham & Murphy, 1924, Tortopsis limoncocha Molineri, 2010 e Tortopsis spatula Molineri, 2010. Descrevemos uma nova espécie, Tortopus ipixuna sp. nov., a partir de imagos que apresentam um distinto pedestal subretangular. Adicionalmente redescrevemos a imago macho de Tortopus harrisi Traver 1950 (previamente conhecida apenas pelo holótipo), e registramos Tortopsis canum Gonçalves, Da-Silva & Nessimian, 2011 pela primeira vez para o Espírito Santo, e Tortopsis spatula para o Equador. Algumas variações em estruturas dessas espécies também são descritas, ilustradas e discutidas.

Ephemeroptera (Insecta) from Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil / Ephemeroptera (Insecta) do Estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil

The first list of the species of Ephemeroptera from Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil, is presented. The survey was based on collections from numerous rivers and streams of 17 counties. A total of five families, 28 genera, and 38 species were recorded, including 22 genera and 31 species newly recorded from Pernambuco State. Moreover, Farrodes tepui Domínguez, Molineri & Peters, 1996, Lisetta ernsti Thomas & Dominique, 2005, and Simothraulopsis (Maculognathus) sabalo Kluge, 2007 are recorded for the first time to Brazil.

É apresentada a primeira lista de espécies da ordem Ephemeroptera do Estado de Pernambuco, Região Nordeste do Brasil. O levantamento foi baseado em coletas em vários rios e riachos de 17 municípios. Foram registrados cinco famílias, 28 gêneros e 38 espécies, incluindo 22 novos gêneros e 31 espécies novas para o Estado de Pernambuco. Além disso, Farrodes tepui Domínguez, Molineri & Peters, 1996, Lisetta ernsti Thomas & Dominique, 2005 e Simothraulopsis (Maculognathus) sabalo Kluge, 2007 são registrados pela primeira vez para o Brasil.

Espécies de Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) do Sul da Bahia, com descrição de uma nova espécie de Paracloeodes day / Species of Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) from Southern Bahia State, Brazil, with description of a new species of Paracloeodes day

Based on collections in five municipalities from southern Bahia, a new species, Paracloeodes quadridentatus sp. n., is described from Brazil. It can be distinguished, among other characteristics, by the presence of three, often four, well developed denticles on the tarsal claws, a characteristic that has never been found in other species of the genus. Besides the description of the new species, the following 14 taxa of Baetidae are recorded for the first time from the State of Bahia: Americabaetis alphus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Americabaetis labiosus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Aturbina georgei Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Baetodes sp., Callibaetis sp., Camelobaetidius francischettii Salles Andrade & Da-Silva, Camelobaetidius lassance Salles & Serrão, Camelobaetidius sp. 1, Camelobaetidius sp. 2, Cloeodes cf. opacus Nieto & Richard, Cryptonympha dasilvai Salles & Francischetti, Spiritiops silvudus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Waltzoyphius fasciatus McCafferty & Lugo-Ortiz e Zelusia principalis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty. As this is the first survey of Baetidae from Bahia, and it was restricted to the southern part of the state, sampling efforts in other areas are extremely required and should increase considerably the number of species, or even genera, reported from the state.

A imago macho de Americabaetis longetron Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty é descrita a partir de ninfas criadas em campo no município de Alfredo Chaves, ES. A espécie pode ser diferenciada das outras imagos machos do gênero pela seguinte combinação de características: 1) olhos turbinados uniformemente separados, superfície dorsal elipsoidal; 2) tergitos com linha longitudinal mediana castanho-clara amarelada; 3) primeiro artículo do fórceps com uma constrição medioapical distinta; 4) comprimento do corpo relativamente longo (6,3 mm). É proposta a primeira chave para identificação das imagos machos do gênero.

The male imago of Americabaetis longetron Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty is described based on nymphs reared on field in the municipality Alfredo Chaves, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. The species can be distinguished from the others male imagos of the genus by the following combination of characters: 1) turbinate eyes uniformly separated from each other, upper surface ellipsoidal; 2) terga with a light yellowish brown band along midline; 3) genitalia with first segment distinctly constricted medioapically; 4) length of body relatively long (6.3 mm). The first key to the male imagos of the genus is also proposed.

Situación actual del estudio del orden Ephemeroptera en Cuba / Current situation of the study of the order Ephemeroptera in Cuba

Se realiza un repaso histórico al estudio del orden Ephemeroptera en Cuba desde principios del siglo XIX, en que fueron descubiertas las primeras especies, y un análisis de la composición actualmente conocida de la fauna cubana, por familias, géneros y especies. Se explica la distribución geográfica de las especies dentro de la isla de Cuba, así como el endemismo, llevándose a cabo un estudio comparativo entre las regiones biogeográficas reconocidas para el país. Por último se ofrecen recomendaciones sobre las líneas de trabajo a abordar en este orden en Cuba.

A history of the study of the order Ephemeroptera in Cuba since the XIX century, when the first species were discovered, and an analysis of the current list of families, genera and species is presented. Endemism and the geographical distribution of the species in Cuba are commented upon, as well as the relations between the biogeographical areas of the country. Finally, some suggestions are given in connection with future research on the order Ephemeroptera in Cuba.

A new species of Tricorythodes Ulmer ( Ephemeroptera: Leptohyphidae ) from Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil

Tricorythodes molinerii sp. n. é descrita e ilustrada baseada em ninfas do sudeste do Brasil. A espécie nova pode ser distinguida das demais espécies de Tricorythodes Ulmer pela seguinte combinação de caracteres: 1) projeção genal presente; 2) palpo maxilar bi-segmentado, com seta apical curta; 3) pronoto com projeções anterolaterais bem desenvolvidas; 4) região dorsal do fêmur anterior com uma fileira transversal de setas; 5) garra tarsal sem dentículos marginais e com um dentículo submarginal de cada lado; 6) brânquia opercular triangular, sombreada com negro e com uma marca esbranquiçada subbasal; e 7) comprimento do corpo grande.

Key to the genera of Ephemerelloidea (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) from Brazil / Chave para os gêneros de Ephemerelloidea (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) do Brasil

A key to the Brazilian genera of Ephemerelloidea, nymphs and adults, belonging to the families Coryphoridae, Leptohyphidae and Melanemerellidae is presented. Currently, seven genera of this superfamily are known in Brazil. The Leptohyphidae is the most representative family, with five genera registered from the country, Leptohyphes Eaton, 1882, Leptohyphodes Ulmer, 1920, Traverhyphes Molineri, 2001, Tricorythodes Ulmer, 1920 and Tricorythopsis Traver, 1958. The families Coryphoridae and Melanemerellidae are monotypic, represented by Coryphorus Peters, 1981and Melanemerella Ulmer, 1920.

Neste trabalho é apresentada uma chave para identificação dos gêneros brasileiros de Ephemerelloidea, ninfas e adultos, pertencentes às famílias Coryphoridae, Leptohyphidae e Melanemerellidae. Atualmente, sete gêneros desta superfamília são conhecidos no Brasil. Leptohyphidae é a família mais representativa, com cinco gêneros registrados para o país, Leptohyphes Eaton, 1882, Leptohyphodes Ulmer, 1920, Traverhyphes Molineri, 2001, Tricorythodes Ulmer, 1920 and Tricorythopsis Traver, 1958. Coryphoridae e Melanemerellidae são monotípicas, representadas por Coryphorus Peters, 1981e Melanemerella Ulmer, 1920.

Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) na região sudeste do Brasil: novos registros e chave para os gêneros no estágio ninfal / Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) from Southeastern Brazil: new records and key to nymph genera

Com o intuito de complementar e integrar o conhecimento relativo à fauna de Baetidae do sudeste brasileiro, treze espécies e nove gêneros dessa família são registrados. Dos vinte gêneros da família relatados para o Brasil, apenas cinco não foram encontrados na Região Sudeste. Uma lista com todas as espécies registradas, incluindo sua distribuição e referências bibliográficas pertinentes, é apresentada. Uma chave ilustrada é proposta para a identificação dos gêneros no estágio ninfal registrados até o momento para a região.

In order to complement and integrate the knowledge regarding the fauna of Baetidae from Southeastern Brazil, thirteen species and nine genera of this family are recorded. Out of the twenty small minnow mayflies genera reported from Brazil, only five were not found for the region. A checklist of the species reported, including their distribution and pertinent bibliography, is presented. A pictorical key to nymphs is proposed for the identification of the genera in Southeastern Brazil.

Cryptonympha dasilvai sp. n. (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) é descrita baseada em ninfas coletadas nos estados do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, Região Sudeste do Brasil. A nova espécie pode ser diferenciada de C. copiosa Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, única outra espécie do gênero, por apresentar: labro não estreitado anteriormente; prosteca esquerda sem cerda longa, robusta e pilosa na margem mediana; projeção distomediana do segundo artículo do palpo labial curta; vestígios de tecas alares posteriores; garras com duas fileiras de dentículos; padrão de coloração abdominal; e maior número de espinhos no paraprocto. O gênero é pela primeira vez registrado para o estado do Rio de Janeiro

Cryptonympha dasilvai sp. n. is described based on nymphs collected from the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from C. copiosa Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, the other species of the genus, by the: labrum not narrowly rounded anteriorly; prostheca of left mandible without a long, robust and pilose seta; second segment of labial palp with short distomedial process; vestiges of hind wing pads; claws with two rows of denticles; abdominal color pattern; and number of spines in the paraprocts. The genus is for the first time recorded from the Rio de Janeiro State

Nova espécie de Cloeodes Traver (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / New species of Cloeodes Traver (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Cloeodes jaragua, new species, is described based on nymphs collected from the Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The distribution of C. jaragua is possibly restricted to the Serra dos Órgãos. The new species represents the first record of the genus Cloeodes from Rio de Janeiro basedon a nominal species.

Cloeodes jaragua, nova espécie, é descrita a partir de ninfas coletadas na Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro. C. jaragua tem possivelmente sua distribuição restrita à Serra dos Órgãos. A nova espécie representa o primeiro registro do gênero Cloeodes, a partir de uma espécie nominal, para o estado do Rio de Janeiro.
